MemberFinally doing this after being back from Montana a week or so. Flew into Spokane, WA, rented a car and headed to Libby, MT which is in the Northwest Corner of Montana. Libby is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. I lived there for a couple of summers in college and it’s been a while since I’ve been back. My friend lives up there and works as a fisheries technician, he also used to guide on the Kootenai River. We planned on spending a day or two on the Kootenai and then heading down to fish some Missoula rivers. On our way to my friends from Spokane we stopped and fished the Kootenai at a spot that I knew would have some fish for us…

Here is my buds first trout in MT

That next day we hit the river and floated on of my favorite sections. I tied on a huge streamer to prospect for big… Rainbows (not bull trout ;)) Well, the day on the water was beautiful, but the fishing was not so great. We caught a bunch of white fish and a few rainbows, but didn’t take any pics.
That night we decided we didn’t want to stick around to fish the Kootenai. We work up early that next morning and headed down to St. Regis to float the lower Clark Fork. This was my first time floating this section of the river and it was an awesome float. We put in and right away started catching fish on dries. Nothing huge, but it was consistent enough to keep it fun. I should back up and say that my bud was catching fish on dries. I was busy hucking streamers.

I ended up hooking into a huge rainbow and lost it right at the net. I stuck with the streamer and caught a couple more fish.

The trees made pictures really turn out well

The fish of the day was a nice cutthroat on a size 18 bwo

That night we camped

The next day we headed to the Bitterroot. This was probably my favorite river of the trip. Very, Very cool float.

The streamer fishing was just ok, but my friend manage to land the trout of the trip!

We managed a few more…

The next day we floated the Upper Clark Fork. This river was way different than the lower Clark Fork. There was a lot of braids and the spring run off tore this place up. We actually got caught down a side channel and had to row back up stream and then walk the boat down a small chute. The fishing was way off and we only caught and saw a few fish. Here is one that had a messed up chin. (Sorry for the bad pic)

These don’t work in Montana rivers ever…

The last full day of our trip we headed way up the Clark Fork near Warm Springs and wade fished. We had a tip that the fishing might be really good. We caught some fish, but the tip was way off. lol

I love Montana and actually fell in love with Missoula. My wife and I decided it’s time to move. So, we are selling our house and heading out west as soon as we can!
