MemberConnor,
The major tailwaters (Bighorn, Missouri, and Beaverhead) will be your best bet.

MemberI agree with Jay, the Bighorn is probably the easiest to do on the cheap side.

I was in Bozeman two weeks ago and took a little sojourn over to the Paradise Valley Spring Creeks for some photos. We were in MT to close on our new house, so fishing was out of the question (women). However, on Saturday we drove over to Livingston to look at the Creeks and take some photos. Tons of fish, a few rising and no one was fishing. What a bargain for $40. They were in great shape and the weather was in the 30s.

Well when I get up to Bozeman on a permanent basis you’ll have to give me the tour.

MemberJust seeking a little free advice from the board. I am wanting to hit the road and escape the office for 10 days or so in March or April. I have never visited Montana and really want to go. I need to do this vacation as cheap as possilbe so I will forgo the use of guides and lodges and look for ‘clean’ but cheap motels. Thanks.
ConnorConner, I don’t know if you are going to be anywhere near Atlanta for the weekend of 26/27 Jan. If you are, checkout the Atlanta’s Fly Fishing Festival in Gwinett http://www.castlow.com/gaswfe.html. One of the guys attending is Rooster Leavens, a guide who runs the Stonefly Inn in Twin Bridges, MT ($59 night) in some cases. http://thestoneflyinn.com/. He runs a really top-notch outfit. I know there’s some really good fishing early in the season on the Big Hole, Beaverhead and Jefferson if you know what your doing. Rooster can tell you and get you on the right track.

MemberI’ve managed to spend a few weeks in missoula during the time you are looking to head up. I think It is a prime place to set up camp. there are tons of rivers to hit: Clarks fork, Bitterroot, Blackfoot. Most of my success has been on the clarks fork and Rock Creek. Also if you find your way up to Missoula there is a place Called Mo’ club. They have the best burgers west of the Mississippi. I recomend the Griz.
Cheers,

MemberWhen is your permanent move? Funny, my family might be joining you in that decision…
Jay
Its a balancing with my current job which I hope keep, at least in some form when I move. My goal is a complete transition by summer’s end, but should be in Bozeman off and on all year. Time will tell.
I will look forward to a trip to the Creeks.

Wise choice Lando!
Conner there is a lot of good advice here. I know that the Missouri, the Big Horn, and the Beaverhead can all fish really well that time of year but so can the Clark Fork the Bitterroot and the lower stretches of Rock Creek. I would not recommend the Blackfoot though. I takes about a month longer before it starts fishing very well. The Clark Fork and the Bitterroot have the years first Skwalla hatch. It can be a very happy thing. The weather can be sunny and nice one minute and a white out the next though so bring lots of layers. A big saying around here is “if you don’t like the weather wait a minute”. It is never more true than in the spring of the year.
The MO Club does have a very good burger not to mention lots of local color. I am sure you would not be disappointed!

MemberLando… is April for sure. I would suggest more into May.

Joel ThompsonMemberThat sounds great Lando! Give me as much notice as to the day you are coming so I can make sure to get it off. There are only two things that will screw me up. One I take my outfitters exam in April sometime (I will let you know the date as soon as I do) and two if I have a client on that day. With enough notice I can work around the second one.
Beer and pizza sounds great!
