The savage used to not be all that tough.

The Savage is now running at about 105 CFS.

They are now draining the Savage.  I have been fishing with a local expert and he has had trouble catching fish there.
It is the worst river for wading that I have been on or in.  Very slick.

The only river I have experienced that was tougher wading is the Yough. At least on the Savage you are only flirting with a broken limb. On the Yough you’re dancing with the reaper himself.
Third place is a draw between the North Branch Potomac and the Upper/Mid Lehigh.

The savage is a tough wading stream, but there is rarely a hole in it that you will disappear in.

The yough and North Branch on the other hand can leave you inserious danger.

Interesting that the savage shocking surveys show the same number of fish as previous years.

the streams that feed the savage reservoir also have great rainbow and brookie fishing.

i have yet to encounter a stream more treacherous to wade than the savage. those rocks are round and slick.

here is a pic of the stream for those who have no idea what we are talking about

as for the north branch, paps bait shop is one of the most back woods places i’ve ever seen. when i worked in a fly shop round here, lots of guys said they carried a side arm when fishing up there due to the locals ‘coming out of the woods’ and approaching them

Rob, you must be referring to the local rattlesnakes…yes, those locals are bad.

I don’t think you need to worry too much about the human kind of locals.

I fish the north branch a fair amount and have never had a problem, either with the local people or snakes.

not trout related, but people have been catching stripers up to 24″ at gravely point the last few days after work.

i’ve fished there before with no luck. thinking about changing my tactics and heading down there one day after work to see what that spot can produce.

-for those not from here, gravely point is a park at the north end of national (reagan) airport. there is a boat ramp and parking lot. the planes fly just over your head-close enough that you can count the rivets in the metal.

Rob hit me up if you head out there – I work about 3 minutes from there.
