I won a flyline as a “door prize” in a drawing at a nice little local flyshop recently (thanks, Flysouth!).

You’re always better overlining than underlining, and that is especially true of a modern fast action rod.

Do you have a six weight?

Nope, next lightest rod is a 5wt.  I guess I’ve never had much use for a 6wt with the fishing I do – nothing the 5wt couldn’t cover just fine, anyway.

I’m sure the 7wt TT would be a little heavy for the 5wt.

I’ll give the line a throw on the 8wt, just to see how it feels.  But I’m thinking you’ll probably be right – if anything, I think I tend to like the feel of a heavy line for the rod.

Many shops will happily swap you and give you a different line size, but I’d go to a different shop to try it.

I won the line for free in a drawing, so I would feel like it would be impolite to take it back like I expected to get something else.  It’s a nice line; it’s not the shop’s fault I don’t have a 7wt.

That’s why you go to a different shop.
