    Guys,

I’m making out the christmas list for this year and I’m planning on asking for some polarized glasses. I plan to use these mostly for trout fishing but also for carp. What color would you recommend?

I was always told that copper lenses were preferred but more recently, particularly in the redfishing podcast with Capt. Seth Vernon, that vermillion is the better color. Is there a noticable difference? When is one better than the other? Do any of the companies put out charts or other literature about which colors are best for which light conditions?

    Thanks,
    Seth

    Hey Seth,

    This might help: http://www.costadelmar.com/SeeOutThere/Technology/PureLensPerfection/index.cfm?

I love [s:18dvsxp0]Zach's[/s:18dvsxp0] my Costa Wingmans with the copper 580 glass lenses.   😉

I also have a pair of Costa’s Cheecas with gray glass 580 lenses, but I prefer the copper lenses in the Wingmans.

I wore a pair of Smiths for ages, but I don’t remember what they call the lens color – something like Costa’s copper, I suspect.

I’m curious about what you end up choosing.  🙂

I am about to order a pair of Habervision sunglasses. They are about half the price of Maui’s or Costa’s and I’ve heard a few good reviews. I’m told the copper/rose is a great color for the flats as well as spring creeks. They are quite innovative with their coatings and they even make upside down bifocals so us old guys don’t trip on our own feet wading!

On the other hand, if you’re not buying…. 😉

I have worn Native Eyewear with gray lenses for about five years and I’ve always seen the fish well.

Ok, so I’ve done some more research since the original post and I’m leaning toward the Costa Blackfins. They look like they will block out most of the light in peripheral vision with the big fat frames and there is a shop within driving distance that will make the prescription lenses (I should have mentioned, I’m a 4-eyes). I did notice that there is a big up-charge for the glass lenses over the polycarbonate. Is there much of a difference in visibility? Are they that much easier to scratch?

Back to the color. It seems like most everyone likes the copper. Has anybody tried the Vermillion?

    Thanks for the advice everybody.

I’ve worn Smith Action Optics Clearwater Copper for years, I was going to give the Costa 580 a try (lots of friends swear by them), but after research (their site sucks) and making a call to Costa, they don’t do the 580 in bi-focal or prescriptions, so looks like another pair of Padre’s for me.

I have been wearing Oakley radars with Amber polarized lenses for the last few years until this summer when I bought a pair of the Costa 580 in Copper, and they are awsome to say the least! I have heard, and I think it was from Zach, that the Costas now come in 580 polycarbonate.

For years I used standard polarized lenses I ordered from my optometrist fitted into Flexon titanium aviator frames.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.

I’ve been switching from a pair of Costa 580 glass and Costa 580 plastic lenses; they are both light enough that I can’t tell a weight difference, although you might find that glass lenses are heavier in the larger frame sizes.

    Zach,

Do you notice any distortion with the poly lenses versus glass? I have a pair of Maui Jim’s and I’m not at all happy with what appears to be edge distortion. Granted, I’ve just gone to contacts for fishing, running, etc. from progress bifocals which would have forced me to buy multiple pairs (read: colors) of $500 sunglasses. I mentioned this to my wife and well, it wasn’t pretty….

On the other hand, I don’t want to buy the Costa’s and end up with the same problem as the Maui Jim’s.

I don’t notice any distortion on either lens, Michael.
