Anyone ever float or wade any Kentucky streams/rivers for smallmouths? I’m thinking of doing a trip on Elkhorn Creek or the Kentucky River up by Frankfort, or dropping in the Green River. I’m not an advanced paddler and am taking a newby angler along, so something slow and, depending on water levels, with plenty of shallow shoals where we can get out and wade would be ideal. I’m not familiar with the area and not sure where there is public access. I do know there’s a canoe operation out of Frankfort. Anyone ever use it? Seems kind of touristy, no so much a real fishing outfitter.

On another note, does anyone know if there are smallmouths in any of the streams and rivers in the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri?

Saying the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri covers a lot of different areas. But yes there are plenty of smallmouth streams in this wonderful state.

    Current River
    Jacks Fork
    Eleven Point
    and many, many more.

I just fished the elkhorn last week while visiting the in=laws. Contact forward cast fly shop in Loiusville. I think his name is dick. He knows every inch of every stream in the state and can give you very good advice. He talked to me one day for no less than 3 hrs on smallmouth fishing. I grew up in Danville, 90 miles away and he knew holes that I did not even know about in my own town.
Canoe KY is the company your thinking of. It has the equipment to get you access, not sure if they will be of any help on the fishing side.
Yes, the elkhorn can be waded in most areas. All of my fish last week, all 4, came on the top side of the rapids at the end of pools.
I highly recommend calling Forward Cast and get his advice. He will know exactly what you can do and can not. Elkhorn may or may not be your best option. I fished it because of Canoe Ky and their services. He will know

    Curtis:

There are lots of good streams for smallmouth and Kentucky bass in Kentucky, most not known outside of their local area.
