MemberSorry Zach, but we are raising boys to be sissy’s these days. I’m suprised that we have not replaced circumcision with castration.
I wouldn’t say we all are………………..pretty sure mine could hold his own against a lot of grown men.
At 14, he schooled a “skilled” angler last week.

I salute you for raising the kid right.

MemberWow – I’d completely forgotten about those books. But reading your post, I had this visual image in my head…and then I googled up the name and found pictures of some book covers. Then I remembered that, yes, I did read the “Big Red” book, and probably others.
I seem to recall really loving a book called “My Side of the Mountain”. I wanted to grow up to be an Indian, but my ancestry made that impossible so I always figured being a trapper would have to do. But I was born too late to be a “real” trapper (i.e. mountain man). When I found “My Side of the Mountain”, I decided that THIS was something I could definitely pull off!
Never did, of course, and now my wife won’t let me.
As a kid, My Side of the Mountain was my favorite book.

MemberI didn’t read any of those books as a kid, was always too busy hunting and fishing.

MemberI read every Kjelgaard book I could find growing up. They were a staple of my early reading diet. I also read “My Side of the Mountain” which book had a great impact on me. Jack London and Robert Louis Stevenson were strong favorites. I had subscriptions to “Field and Stream” and “Outdoor Life” and developed a love of the last page humorists Ed Zern (RIP) and Pat McManus.
I was lucky to live within walking distance of quality fishing throughout all my school-age years, and we never owned a TV or a PC until I was much older (high school age). I understand that this situation was fairly rare, even in the 70’s and 80’s. I still find it sad that most modern kids may never aquire the kind of longing for adventure that’s instilled by reading substantive literature.

MemberI think there are still plenty of kids getting the seed for adventure planted through reading.

MemberRecently our family listened to Rascal by Stirling North, another great book. It has a great section about an uncle who fly fishes. My Daughter is reading some of Jim’s books now.
“Rascal” was also a favorite.
