Cameron MortensonMember…and “Pimp”?
I picked up the latest issue of Fly Rod and Reel today and while leafing through it I came across a questionaire article where three fly industry noteables responded regarding the end of the world and what you would wish to do in your final days.
One of those interviewed for this piece was James Prosek. I know that I am not the only one who has noticed this…but this fellow likes to write about how much action he gets with the ladies while traveling the world searching out trout spots. Pick up any books he’s written…and it is in there. In some cases…over and over again.
Where the other people interviewed for this piece kept it strictly to fly fishing (which I am sure was the intent since it was an article for FLY ROD AND REEL!) James Prosek just had to show what a lady’s man he is with his first respose being “Elizabeth Hurley in a tub…with me in it.”
Give us ALL a break. We get it…you dig chicks.
Alright…I’ll step off my soap box now…ha.

The Itinerant AnglerThis is really funny.

MemberHere’s guessing Hurley’s answer to that question would have little to do with Prosek and a bathtub.

MemberI stopped reading Prosek after Fly Fishing the 41st because he boasted so much about his ability to poach trout in Southern Europe (ie, not buy a license, get permission, etc.).

InactiveGood post…glad to see others were/are annoyed by Prosek’s self proclaimed womanizing.
I do not get Fly Rod and Reel but I did read Fly fishing the 41st and was unimpressed by his boasting both in regards to women and alcohol. He talked of drinking several bottles of wine at a time and of course all of the women he had in his travels.
Hey James…I went to college too. It was a helluva lot of fun….
If any of you have seen the video put out by “The Drake” Magazine called “Feeding Time”, Prosek is interviewed several times in that video…is it me or does he come across as extremely pompous and narcisistic?
Count me as one who wont spend another dime on his work.
Oh, and Zach…we would love for you not to take the “politcal” route on this one…you cant be buddies with EVERYONE in the industry.

MemberWell if things are going to start rolling this way then I’m going to come back and say that my earlier comment was meant to be taken tongue-in-cheek.

The Itinerant AnglerSeafood –
I’ve met him but I am by no means a buddy of his; Carter’s right though – I’ll poke a little light-hearted fun but I’m not going to slam him.

MemberOf course he does well with the ladies– he went to Yale. And did I mention he went to Yale?
Now, if I write “Yale” 1400 more times, my post will look like a chapter from that Izaak Walton book of his.
Not to bash. Just saying is all….

MemberWhile Prosek isn’t my favorite fishing writer, he makes the short list.

MemberMost of the writers we read grew up in a different era and have a many more miles on their odometers. All of us are comfortable with the Geirach style of storytelling….largely because we grew up in the places and with the people in the stories….but also because they don’t push any boundaries.
So Poaching and Fishing without a license is OK!

MemberI’ve never been to that corner of the world but I’ll trust your word that this is a problem.

InactiveWhile Prosek isn’t my favorite fishing writer, he makes the short list. And since there are a lot of people casting a lot of stones I thought I’d chime in.
First, I think you have to look at this writing as a good mixture of travel and fishing….not strictly fishing. In addition to that, what Prosek offers is a youthful perspective that we rarely see. Most of the writers we read grew up in a different era and have a many more miles on their odometers. All of us are comfortable with the Geirach style of storytelling….largely because we grew up in the places and with the people in the stories….but also because they don’t push any boundaries. I understand that Prosek’s description of his good fortune in the bedroom is not for everyone but this thread sounds like a bunch of old men might have gotten laid once or twice (procreation purposes only of course), but not in recent decades.
Had to chuckle at the ‘two bottles of wine’ comment….most guys at that age are in filthy basements with low ceilings chugging natural light until they puke. It’s interesting that that’s what got under your skin about Prosek, Seafood. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on Traver’s bourbon consumption…..
Been away from a PC for over a week now…just trying to get caught up here.
His drinking of wine comes across to me as rather pompous in two ways:
1.

Memberhell who hasn’t drunk two bottles of wine?

Cameron MortensonMemberOK…I started this thread…and I really didn’t intend this to be a slam feast on ol’ James.

MemberI’ve been away from the computer for about a month now, and, as an infrequent poster, certainly don’t have the seniority (and probably shouldn’t have the audacity) to make this post, but what the hey …
I LIKE Prosek, his art, and, generally, his writings.

Bob RigginsMemberI don’t know who James Prosek is, but “Elizabeth Hurley in a tub…” and two bottles of wine sounds pretty good to me (just don’t tell my wife!)

InactiveWell you certainly restirred the pot for me…
I dont mind that he mixed in a story here and there about drinking, interludes with women etc, I too enjoy a nice mixture of topics…I actually liked it as well.

The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
I like this thread and I like the fact that it has remained (mostly) civil.
