MemberJust wanted to introduce myself. I am already quite familiar with the site, having been a so-called “board lurker” (such a deplorable title) for some time now. Therefore, I have decided to lift myself from the pits of anonymity and become an upstanding member of the board. Looking forward to future discussions.

MemberCarter,
I mainly hit the usual Central Arkansas locations; Little Red, Buffalo, Saline and some of the nearby lakes. However, I occasionaly venture to more distant locations in the Ozarks (particularly those only reachable by backpacking) and other waters near my hometown of Fort Smith. Recently, I have fished Rock Creek in Little Rock on my lunch breaks.

MemberCarter,
I’m not sure if your aware, but AGFC started an urban trout stocking program about two years ago. Consequently, Rock Creek receives a significant number of rainbow trout every winter which remain fishable until around early April. The first stocking (~750 rainbows) took place on December 6th. If interested, you should check out the specifics at the AGFC website under the fish management category. There are a number of other urban locations that receive trout stockings all around the state. To answer your question more specifically, other than the trout, I have not caught any bass or bream worth mentioning. You are right on the Arkansas river being the best water in town. I live adjacent to Rebsamen Park and am able to fish the shoreline quite frequently.

MemberCarter,
I would not exactly say that fishing for seasonally stocked trout in an urban stream is my passion either. However, as a beginning fly fisherman the opportunity for practice on casting, line mending, drifting, etc. in real life scenarios is hard to pass up on a lunch break. As for your mention of carp, the only nearby water I have ever specifically targeted the fish was at Lake Dardanelle. Out of curiosity, have you ever fished for walleye in the Saline River?

MemberNo actually I haven’t.

MemberExcluding periods of above normal rainfall, the vast majority of the upper saline is wadable. Personally, I mainly fish (wade-only) the section just north of Benton at the AGFC put-in on HWY 5. The only species of fish I have caught has been limited to bass (smallmouth, largemouth and spotted) and bream. I have never been walleye fishing (always been curious), but am told that at times the Saline can be a very productive fishery. From what I understand, sections of the Alum fork (near Peeler Bend) include some very good walleye populations. In addition, this particular portion of the river is much wider and deeper than average, allowing an opportunity for float trips.
