I thought it would be interesting to see which artists influence and inspire photographers here on this forum. Who’s painting, sculpture, drawings, etc do you like or get moved by? Who’s work makes you want to create something of your own?

He’s a fly fisherman and a lot of his paintings are landscapes based on trout streams – many have been inspired by Mosies photos.

Georgia O’Keeffe, I love her use of simple forms

Alfred Stieglitz, THE pioneer in photographic composition (plus he had a fondness for Georgia O’Keefe).
Not to mention Neal Osborn, Zach Mathiews and Morsie.Bob, I was just in San Francisco last week and there was an Ansel Adams/Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit at SFMOMA. It was very cool to see their work side by side. I don’t think I had seen her work in person before, and while her style has been widely emulated, there is something special about seeing her paintings up close and the amazing colors she used.
My friends wife said her stuff looked very ’80s to her… I then pointed out the date (1925) on the info card. ;DDavid, I find it interesting how Micheal’s paintings have depth and appear very flat/2 dimensional at the same time. He has a nice use of color as well.
Will, thanks for sharing. I had never seen Norman’s work before but it’s amazing, I’m watching some of his films on youtube right now. Wanda’s work looks interesting as well.

The professor focused so much on the religious and political aspects of art that it turned me off. However, the older I get it becomes apparent that I should have paid more attention to the art itself. Lately I have going to the library and perusing books on classic artists and find a wealth of information and inspiration in regard to shading, light, composition, and balance. The links above are apprecited – will have to check them out.
My hero is Frank Netter, MD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_netter. http://www.netterimages.com/artist/netter.htm. He was the pioneer in medical anatomy instructional illustration. Although very detailed in application, he had a style that is indescribable and often imitated.
David, I find it interesting how Micheal’s paintings have depth and appear very flat/2 dimensional at the same time. He has a nice use of color as well..
He uses some ceramics in some of those along with paint – not sure how it works, but the surface ends up like it’s coated in thin glass in some places – I think a blow torch is required somewhere in the process.
His color is 100% Australian high country in summer in that series – it’s a unique thing..I really want one, but they’re fairly expensive.. 😮

We saw the Adams/O’Keeffe exhibit in Sante Fe, when we were in New Mexico last year.
Cool topic .. its always interesting to see what inspires people.
A few that come to mind fairly quick – Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Coen Brothers, David Lynch … Max Ernst, Joseph Cornell … Estevan Oriol, CindySherman .

Corey, one of my biggest freak out celebrity moments (I kept my cool and only freaked out on the inside). Was surprisingly when I walked into the taco shop down the street from my house and Estevan Oriol was sitting in there at a table with some other guys going over a music video shoot they had coming up! One of those Holy $#!† I’m sitting at the table next to an amazing photographer and he eats the same crappy burritos as me moments.
Funny how in my book that tops the time I literally almost walking directly into Sly Stalone on the sidewalk because I was busy checking out his car that valet had just pulled up.I love the Cohen Brothers work as well. Not to mention Roger Deakins lenses their stories so well!

That’s interesting, is there a 3 dimensional texture or more of a glaze on the paintings?
