I’m looking around for a large arbor reel for my six-weight rod. Galvan is a consideration, as is the Sage line. Is anyone here familiar with the Sage 3250? I love the rods (four of ’em) but don’t know anything about the reels. The price point on that one is about right, but would like to hear some reviews if possible.

    Mike –

Sage reels are primarily imported and re-badged (thus the nice price). Historically they’ve favored stacked washers for their drag systems, which are plenty strong enough for any trout application but would be undergunned for stripers or many saltwater fish.

I’ve got several Sage reels as well as Ross, Abel (sold them), Cabelas, Orvis, Bass Pro, Lamson, ect.

There aren’t any of them that I wouldn’t put up against any freshwater fish I’ve ever caught short of the 1-3 wt ones.

I’ve most recently really started liking the Sage Reels. They just suit me. They feel good, look good, operate flawlessly so far, and take a beating. My favorite is the 6000 series. These aren’t cheap reels and have handled everything I have thrown at them including saltwater, which they are made for.

If your gonna fish for Tarpon, sharks, saltwater big game, or tie your line to a motorcycle and peel off line at 70 mph you might want to invest in something a little beefier. For what I do, freshwater trophy hunting, very little saltwater, Sage works great. I have the older cousin of the 3250 with 6wt line on it and it’s one of my favorites. They make a solid reel. Trust me.

I have a fetish for nice fly reels. I have a 4660 that I am very pleased to own. I use it on a 7 wt rod. I like everything about it — weight, aesthetics, and function. I would buy another one.

In candor, however, I have never had a chance to use it on steelhead or anything in the salt that might put a 7 wt rod (and reel) to a real test. Maybe that will happen this year.
