I am looking for a lense to take photos of birds and wildlife that are farther away. I use my Canon SD780IS for macro shots while fishing and it is fine for me, since I am not a professional photographer.

I want to be able to take decent shots of wildlife in the woods. I need an inexpensive telephoto lense for my Canon Rebel XTi lens that will do the job for me. I wish I had a better lense last week while we watched a pair of pileated woodpeckers building their nest in a tree by us. One morning we sat having our coffee watching the pileated woodpeckers looking for bugs in the trees and the ground right off our front deck. I had no lense to capture these magnificent birds hopping around 30 to 50 yards away.

Should I be looking at a zoom lense, like this? http://www.keh.com/Product-Details/1/DC07999099407N/DC07/FE.aspx
