Mike, I have a 300 F4 IS L and it’s a great lens, very light and quick to focus and very sharp even wide open.

    Highly recommended.

Well it seems after a week of reading that I’m not the only one in this boat. ;D I have (at least for now…) decided that the 400 5.6 is what I want. After all, 400mm is where I want to be when I’m in wildlife mode and most of the time I want more. All the comparisons I read, watched, and compared, say the 400 has faster AF and is sharper at 400mm then the other three at 400. For the life of me I don’t understand why they don’t make one with IS??? From all that I’ve read I’m sure they would sell about a million of them on the first day.

Thanks to all for the advice!

Mike if they sold a 400mm f4.0 IS, they wouldnt sell as many 500 f4 or 400 f2.8 IS.

It’s a fantastic lens but when comparing apples to apples I really dont see it as being any better than the 300mm f4. Sharper? Only because you’ve added a 1.4 tc to reach 420mm. Anytime you add a TC there will be a hit to IQ. However, Ive got dozens of shots with a TC on the 400mm and if I didnt tell anyone or hid the exif no-one know.

    Faster AF?
Again the diffference is minute..If your shooting really fast action that might make the difference between a keeper or missed op. However, thats largely attributable to the focusing distances. The 400s MFD is 12feet, I have mine set at 21feet. If I drop down to the MFD its focus speed is gutted.

The 300 f4 has much closer MFDs..I tihnk at tis minimum its 4 feet.
Hence its slightly slower to focus. However that closer focusing capabilty make it a far superior lens for long lens/ short distance applications…Dragons, Butterflies, Frogs, Humming birds, etc. So to say ones better than other no, just slightly different.

Either way you will love the 400 for *birding*. If ever a lens was made strictly with one application in mind, its the 400 5.6 and birding

The price isn’t bad either. I wasn’t suggesting one was better just that the 400mm seems to suit what I’m looking for better.

Well I haven’t had much time to shoot with the new camera but I did get out a few just playing around. They are 640×640 and I haven’t taken the time to figure out how to get aperture to size them to 800×800. The 400mm L isn’t as good in low light as the Sony G due to no IS. The AF on the other hand is lightning fast and for that reason I’ve decided to keep the prime over the IS 100-400 version.
