I am not an Abel hater and really do lust after several models of Abel reels. As of late I do think that they are a little over the top with their $1400.00 luggage, $500.00 vises and cigar rollers etc…but this takes the cake:

I just got the new 2006 Abel catalog. They are now selling a 6 piece travel rod that apparently has a shock cord running the length of the sections. “To set up the rod for fishing , simply grasp the handle as if you were casting and flip it out onto the grass. Harry Potter would be proud.” Being a Fox news and O’Reilly fan, I would submit this as the most ridiculous item of the day. Add in the $575.00 price tag and it will be running for the most ridiculous for the year. Kinda reminds me of the Ronco pocket fisherman that was all over the TV when I was a kid. (I REALLY wanted one when I was about 10. Thank God my Dad refused :))

Hahaha, Steve, that was precisely my thought.

I think that when you see a company going to those lengths to be different with a new product it makes you realize how watered down the market is actually becoming.

What ever happened to the days when you put out a sound quality product without the gimick (just like the models of abel reels that you mentioned you sought after)

As I see it, Abel’s main problem has always been that by trading on the utmost high end of the regular market, they have limited themselves to a certain type of customer.

If they lower their prices to reach the middle, they have to sacrifice some of their ‘high end image.’

Why don’t they do something useful? like run a heater wire for the guides that connectes to a battery in the butt.

For us year ’round fishing dude’s.

No heater wire for me, thanks.

;D Maybe it could also be used as a wading stick. I like the idea of wires to warm the guides for winter use. Silver Doc
