I got my new reel the other day-Danilesson LW 6nine. I haven’t had a chance to fish it yet, so a concrete opinion is a little bit off. The first thing I noticed when pulling it out of the box was how damn pretty it is. The fit and finish is very good and you can tell that the company takes pride in their work.

The Second thing that really struck me was the drag. It is as smooth as any cork drag I have ever seen and stays that way all the way to near lockup. The adjustment knob is kind of small, but it has nice positive clicks through it’s entire range. It is supposed to be completely sealed and water proof down to “10 atmospheres”.  I am not sure how deep that really is, but it sounds really cool.

The spool is held on with a clamp system, which uses a screw on knob. You don’t need to take the knob all the way off to get the spool off . Just loosen it up a few turns and you can rotate the retention piece and the spool comes right off. it is certainly not as quick as some systems, but it is very positive. The spool is amazing in itself. It must weigh less than an ounce. I have never seen anything like it. One of their claims is that even with 0 drag set these reels won’t over-run because the spool mass is so low. I believe it.

The only early concern I have is that the spool is machined so thin that a drop on any hard surface is going to easily dent the spool and there is very little room for error between the rim of the spool and the full cage frame. Other than that, this is a very solid feeling reel.

Hopefully this baby will get a good workout this fall on some large chrome missiles. First impressions are telling me it will be a keeper.

Not a lot of tolerance for dents to the edge of the spool

I am pretty much coming to the conclusion that I fall down in rocks too much to own a reel with low dent tolerance.  Sorry, but I’m not one of those guys who will break his fall with body parts to protect gear – if a rod or reel has to land between me and a rock, well, that’s why I pay extra for the lifetime warranties.

I need something where I can knock a notch into the metal and have it still survive.

Steve I played with one of those in the store and literally could not figure out how to get the spool off.

Zach, if you look at the pic of the spool closely you will see three little notches sticking out of the inside. The spool sits on the bottom star and then you rotate the top star over and in line with the bottom one. You then tighten the center knob snug and the spool is on tight as a banjo string. There are additional cutouts in the spool which lock into little nubs on the bottom star. The spool is just clamped between the two stars and it appears very secure.

You can see the notches on the bottom star that the spool cutouts slide onto

I need something where I can knock a notch into the metal and have it still survive.  That seems to mean I have to use much heavier (and probably uglier) reels than the one you’ve got.

I’m just not cut out to own nice stuff.

And I thought the notch’s in your reel had meaning.

We have a couple of the LW 8twelves that we use on spey rods.
