If I’m feeling a good day coming on I will start trying everything in my box. On bad days I typically stick to something that should produce a few bumps, unless I get the notion that nothing I do will make a difference, then I might start trying different things just to see how they look in the water. I have fishing buddies that stick to the same pattern regardless.

Are most of you habitual pattern changers or does it “just depend”?

I would have to say I’m in the “just depends” category.

Hi, my name is Rusty, and I am a habitual fly changer. And I have been that way for 30 years.

I will say this: not nearly often enough.

    Zach,

You probably catch more fish than someone like me. I usually reserve the tippet diameter and depth experiments for the times when I’m “really” fishing–like if I’ve driven longer than three hours or jumped a plane to get somewhere. I did, though, until recently, tie my own leaders and carry a full wallet in my pack for changing fishing situations. For a few hours on my local water (the Caney Fork in Tennessee) I pretty much expect a fly change to cure a-l-l my fishing

::) Depends as to what is hatching and how the fish are responding. Some days I get stubborn and won’t change the fly hoping that the fish will realise it should take that fly. Then I give up and go through maybe 10 changes. great fun. Silver Doc

I change a good bit if things are slow or I am checking out some new patterns etc., but it really depends.
