This year has been a little bit of an anomoly for me as I bought several reels and spools, but apart from gas in the truck I usually only drop about $300 or so on gear and tying material in a typical year. If I want a new rod: I’ve got about $15 in the cane, about $5 in guides, about $25 in reelseat materials, about $25 in cork for a grip, and about $0.50 in silk for wrapping one rod. I try to keep it to making only one or two rods for myself each year and make a few for friends for a song; just take enough money from them to pay for the components and a little for buying more gear for myself. So after what I make for making rods for people I spend none of my own money on fishing gear.
