Hook sizes

Newbie question.

Is there an website that shows the actual (visual) size of hooks?

Hey Rusty,

There are probably sites that can give you a general idea of what you’re dealing with when it comes to hook sizes. The problem is, hook sizes can change drastically depending on the style (i.e. shank length, gape width, bend, etc.). Hook size can also be pretty different depending on the manufacturer. If you can narrow down what you’re looking for to a specific style – for example, a standard length shank dry fly hook, it might be a little easier to point you in the right direction.

That probably didn’t help at all…

I’m pretty sure some of the fly tying books out there have got hook size charts printed in them somewhere.

It’s not that bad Rusty…

It’s sometimes easier to work backwards. What kind of flies are you tying, how big are the flies (length), how big are the fish?

I have the Cliff Outdoors Top Shelf attached to my vise base.  It has a nice big magnet patch for storing hooks and a foan strip for storing finished flies.  It also has hook and hackle gauges laser engraved into the wood.  Pretty handy.
