MemberI am getting ready for hex fishing season here in Michigan and have a pattern I have used in the past but have no free time to make any before the trip.

Cameron MortensonMemberDT…it always seems that there is some new Hex pattern, along with foam boards of all the old classic ones too, that adorn the walls and fly bins of the fly shops in the Grayling area.

MemberCameron,
All of my hex fishing last season was with one pattern and it made a killing. I have a couple left and should probably just buckle down and tie some up. It isn’t at all like any of the standards that you find in the fly shops up north. It has a looong extended body and a little short shank hook with some yellow dubbing and grizzley hackle. White poly for spent wings and some glow in the dark material on top. It is killer. If you meet me at the bridge I will give you one. Ha. :-X

MemberThe most durable and highly visible hex pattern I’ve found is from that ‘ol fish killer from Skips Sport Shop and the book In the Thrill of the Night, Dan Catau.
Polypro yarn body and plenty of calf tail and hackle makes this thing float great.Jun 1, 2009 at 4:44 am #36614
Tim AngeliMemberSpencer,
The good news, I found the pattern you’re talking about.
The bad news, they had one left.I can post a picture if you want so you can let me know if it’s the actual pattern you’re talking about.

MemberTim,
Would you mind posting the pic of that fly?
And to add to the Michigan lovefest, I am in Lansing right now, but I move to the Cascade area next month. Anyone ever fished muskies in or around the GR area? I’ve heard that they are in the Thornapple, and the new house is right across the street from the river. Not like there isn’t enough water to fish in the area, but I am always up for some toothy critters.
You guys ever fish Prairie? I fish there quite often, so let me know if you ever want to meet up and hit it.
One more thing in this random laundry list, if you guys ever get tired of rowing the boat yourselves or just want to have some fun with some chrome, Kevin Feenstra is a friend of mine and great guide on the Muskegon.
Best,
Dave
