The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
After seeing how much smaller and stretchier and smoother Ian’s Maxima tippet was this weekend versus my crappy Wal-Mart special spools, I’m curious now.

MemberHey, Zach. I use Sci Anglers Freshwater Mastery Series tippet in 12 pound test regularly for streamer fishing. It’s a copolymer blend of nylon and I like it’s characteristics. When I’m fishing the lake where I might run into a big striper I use the Mastery Saltwater 16 pound test.
Before I started using SA, I really liked the Silver Thread for streamer leader. They introduced co-polymer in 1985, and it was made in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Not sure where now.
I’m usually using 4-5 feet of straight tippet on a sink tip. So no need to tie tapered leaders for streamer fishing.
PS Are you using Maxima Green? It’s pretty good too.

MemberSeaguar fluro for spinning rods. 250 yards for $14. It’s all I use now for everything.

Bob RigginsMemberI use Seaguar Fluorocarbon for my tippets, however, this is for saltwater applications.

Simon ChuMemberI’ve always wondered if the 200m spools etc were the same flouro as the 30m spools. If so it would seem smarter to buy in bulk.
What are the differences?
Are there any? 😕
Starting with what Bob said about inconsistencies through the length.Jun 9, 2008 at 9:15 pm #26277Eric DeWitt

MemberI use Maxima…
**** remember the spoonbill****
caught on 8lb Maxima….even when Im nymphing during the day I’ll use 6lb Maxima…. but use 8lb when throwing big sculpins…
at night I mainly use 8… both spinning and as tippet….
If I ever run out on the water… well I have the spinning rod spool as a back up….Jun 10, 2008 at 12:11 am #26279Mark Landerman

Starting with what Bob said about inconsistencies through the length.Simon I don’t have any issues with the larger spools at all. Yea, I do break fish off sometimes but it’s usually my fault and not my equipment. I use a drill motor and spool up 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 on small tippet spools with line keepers (rio). Then I keep large spools of 12 17 20 30

MemberMaxima ultragreen is probably the best all around mono fishing line in world. I think Fluro is just a bit less visible underwater so I use it most of the time.

MemberI like PLine flouroclear if I am using a straight, heavy leader.

The Itinerant AnglerWhat’s the best place to walk in and buy Maxima spools locally, generally?
Jun 10, 2008 at 2:59 pm #26285Mike Anderson
MemberZach I always had to buy mine at Cabelas.
Jun 10, 2008 at 3:23 pm #26286andrew brown
MemberI know PBS and Cabelas carry the bulk spools, but I’m not sure you are looking for 2300+ yards of the stuff.
