I finally found some hackle of a particular color and size that I needed for a special fly for an Idaho trip.

The guy had the exact pelt I was looking for………but I am totally ashamed of how much I ended up paying.

    This will be like cigars.

I am doing a lecture in Oklahoma city tonight an two nurses have saddle hackle on their hair. They each paid $60 to have two feathers braided into their hair. OMG that is a lot of money for two feathers.

I haven’t been in a shop in awhile.  If saddle hackle is pretty much history, what’s up with necks?

    Are necks still around?

I am being told quality griz capes and the such are also starting to get scooped up because of the shortage of saddles in the popular dyed griz colors. Check out ebay and you will see a lot of shorter feathers being sold in small bundles. There is a lot I can’t say, I just hope this crazy fade end soons. Hopefully, most of you have a lifetime supply of feathers you need for dry flies and such.

Update: Henry Hoffman on the feather craze… http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20110606/BLOG50/110609874/1004/sports

BTW, I know some shops that have pulled their capes and don’t allow feather ladies to buy them.

Turn about is fair play. Remember when we (fly tyers) were snatching up the clear Sally Hansen’s fingernail polish 10 years ago. 🙂

Ha ha, exactly.  I don’t remember any salons getting mad and saying “we won’t sell to fishermen.”

I’m kind of amazed at flyshops saying “we’re holding back our capes and not selling to women who are coming in wanting to buy them.”

I mean, it’s their choice, but if they’re going to get picky about who buys their product, then I don’t want to hear them complaining later about how the Internet is putting them out of business because their sales are down.
