We spent last week on the gulf, just west of where Zach was.  We stay on Dauphin Island.  About 3mi off the Alabama coast.

The wind on the first 3 days was pretty intense from TS Edouard, but this created some fun for us and the kids with waves sometimes approaching 6ft.  You don’t often see thruster style surfboards on the GOM!

Saturday, Sunday, and Monday were all pretty much a  bust.  My largest rod is a 10wt and even with 400gr sinking line I had a hard time punching the wind.

Tuesday we spent 1/2 the day with an Orvis endorsed guide, I’m not going to name names, but lets just say we won’t be going back.

Wednesday morning we had calm enough seas to launch our 11ft Zodiac in the surf.  We took a couple of loads out to watch dolphins (they swim right up to the zodiac).

I made a quick run over to the “katrina cut” this is a mile wide cut made in the island by katrina.  This is where the fishing starts…

I noted what I thought was floatsam but on second look it appeared to be swimming against the tide… I took a second look and realized it was a treo of large fish… at the distance I couldn’t quite identify, but they appeared to be redfish swimming near the surface…   I launched one cast.. striped the fly (a very simple glass minnow pattern) past the lead fish, when it was about a foot from him he burst with suprising speed onto the fly and the fight was on..  for 40 minutes I had no idea what was on the end of my line… I knew it was big, big enough to pull me and the zodiac out to sea.. and big enough to rip me way, way into 300yrds of backing several times.  At one point a shark showed up, and when he didn’t take my fish I knew I must have something…

Eventually I managed to hoss the fish up to the surface, a MONSTER tripple-tail.  18-20#.   Some of the meanest teeth and huge spikes.  This was like fighting a 20# bream!  That’s a 6gal fuel tank his head almost covers.

Thursday we took a side trip to the Pensacola NAS Museum, a wonderful trip, hundreds of restored aircraft from every generation, and the home base for the blue angels.  Where else can you SIT in actual cockpits?

On Friday my brother-in-law and I ran out to the Katrina cut after another morning of dolphin watching in the zodiac.  Right away he had a strike and a miss on one of my glass minnow flies on the 8wt with floating line and we hooked up with a feisty and toothy bluefish.

The sinking line was really dominating out in the gulf, so we put away the 8wt and used just the 10wt.  Here a VERY nice ladyfish that gave us a run for the money…

While we were there I saw 1 other fish caught by a wade fisherman.

Bottom line.. sinking line.. and fast sinking depth charge are the way to go when it’s hot.

Dang, you see how big that triple tail was when you see him holding the same net!

    Nice report; thanks!

Yeah, and they don’t call em tripple-tail for nothing (they have like, 3 tails, the rear fin set extend back with the tail)… I could hardly move that fish… as hard as i cranked he just wouldn’t budge.. and when he turned flat side to the tide and started running…nothing but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….

You just never know what’s gonna show up in the Gulf of Mexico surf.
