Until last season, I had no experience rowing rafts or drift boats down a river. Last year up here, I was, in Joel’s own words, his All Star wading guide. Thanks Joel. That was a very complimentary thing for you to say.

I grew up with motor boats and canoes.

Dude, that’s a great story and a pig brown. Good job.

Being an eastern guy I have NO rowing experience. My uncle lives in Portland, OR and two falls ago I floated the Deschutes with him for 2 days. Feeling bad that he was on the oars the whole time I volunteered. I think I did two 360’s in the first rapid. I must’ve been white as a sheet when I turned to him and said “Ok, your turn again”. I practiced a bit last summer on the New River on smallmouth floats though so I’m ready to get back on it now. Glad to see that someone else struggled with it as a noob.

I feel for the drift guides…. I give you all props. I did a summer on the Ocoee years ago manning the big rubber buses – white-water is a different game. The difference is… It was okay for my folks to fall out and get wet – the bumpier the better. If they lost their sun glasses – all was well and part of the story.

I should probably reserve this for a seperate Chuck Norris thread but I have to say it, “When Cuck Norris goes swimming in a lake he doesn’t get wet…

Taskmaster? I think I kind of like that title! And I believe me Ron I have many more tasks for you this spring! I love this training stuff guys. It is nice to get some fishing time in for a change!

Ron has improved much and I am confident that he will improve a lot more as we get closer too our season. There is a lot to learn when it comes to rowing and guiding from a boat. Nothing worse than missed opportunities that could have been avoided if the oarsman was planning ahead. On the river you always need to be planning your next move all while watching flies, looking for fish, watching for other anglers, and keeping your eyes open to any potential hazzards. A lot of stuff too keep track of but with practice it does become second nature.

Cam Deb is going to kick your ass for publicly saying she cheats at cards! If skiing up to the cabin ain’t a problem for her then I don’t 1500 miles is far enough for you buddy! 🙂
