    Hey guys –

I just finished reading Nathaniel Philbrick’s National Book Award winner “In the Heart of the Sea,” about the attack and sinking of the whaleship Essex in the Pacific in the 1820s.  This story was the original inspiration and basis for “Moby Dick,” which is my all-time favorite novel.

I can’t recommend this enough; I know a lot of you have probably read it.  The one takeaway I have from it is this:  If you are ever 4,000 miles from shore in an open boat without enough food, when your crew mates start dying, use them as bait instead of eating them.  That seems to be a better strategy. 🙂

My favorite line from that book:

“Know him? Hell I ate him…”

What a great story… I’ve read it many times over the years while commercial fishing.
