I am a bit under the weather with a cold today so there’s no food shots. I’ll have to make up for that. The weather today favored the bobber fisherman. Mostly clear all day with no wind and mid 50s by noon. I stuck to my guns and fished Woolly Buggers all day on the middle Big Hole. Caught a fair number of moderately sized fish—mostly browns, but the occasional rainbow fell to olive buggers and black egg-sucking leechs.

Big Hole River near Notch Bottom

Buggers pulled browns off these grassy banks.
We floated from Glen to Notch Bottom, one of the most picturesque on the river. The river was loaded with redds from spawning browns. Quite a sight to see dozens of 20” fish stacked up in shallow water. My best fish of the day was this brown which fell to an olive bugger in a deep hole.

At lunch I got cajoled into bobber fishing a run with my 5 wgt. After landing a half dozen whities and one puny rainbow, I fished the same run again with the bugger and landed three nice browns. The guide put the 5 wgt away for the day.

The highlight of the day was a herd of 20 or more elk with two bulls walking the bank downstream from us and then crossing the river.
The lowlight of the day was the flat on the guide’s PU at the takeout. But, that stuff does happen and Ely did a quick job of getting it changed and us back home.

Overall however it was one marvelous day of fishing on the Big Hole. A river you don’t forget. Tonight I get some rest for the final day of fishing. We float again—hopefully the Jefferson as tomorrow will have more clouds and mid 50 temps.
