Today started out a bit blustery, a wet warm 52 degrees in Bozeman.  By the time we got to Twin Bridges about 10AM the skies were clearing and the wind was manageable. How do you describe a town of 400—“little”, “quaint”, “geographically perfect?”  I’ll pick the latter.  I first fished the rivers around Twin Bridges, Montana in the early 1970s.  To be truthful, I don’t remember much and I haven’t been back since I left Great Falls in 1973.  I remember a few grayling near Wisdom and browns on the Jefferson.  Today is the first of six days staying at the Stonefly Inn and fishing with the guys at 4RiversFishing.  Tomorrow, we’ll float one of the big three—Big Hole, Beaverhead or Jefferson.  This morning we made the pilgrimage to R. L. Winston to drool over some green sticks.  It is quite an operation and it’s a company that doesn’t skimp on quality.  I was very impressed.

Spent the afternoon ALONE on the Big Hole just west of town.  Fished downstream from High Road access for a bit over a mile-about eight good riffles, runs and pools.  The Big Hole is one tasty stream.

The 7wgt, full sink line and #6 Woolly Buggers produced well with a steady mix of chunky browns and Rainbows.

Finished the day off at the Blue Anchor Café.  Nothing fancy, but the Beer and Chicken Fried Steak sure hit the spot.

Tomorrow I fish, someone else rows!

I recognize that Blue Anchor cafe – only restaurant in Montana I have negative things to say about.

Mike I like the Hippie mans advice on Hoppers. Especially if you are fishing the Big Hole. It was shut completely down during prime hopper season so I don’t think these fish have seen hoppers thrown at them like they usaully do.

Bummer about your experience at the blue anchor Zach. Were you there this past Sunday?
