Going to Broken Bow, Ok. this week. Suggestions? Hints?

Hello everyone,
I am heading to Broken Bow, Ok. after my last final this week. I went there with Dusty M. once and he showed my some nice spots. I was wondering if anybody else fished Broken Bow and had any hints or suggestions for a newby. I was also curious if anybody new about zone 2 of the river, zone 1 has been so crowded the last couple of times I have gone. Any suggestions and tips will be appreciated. Thanks guys.

To my knowledge, there are only a few of us on this board that fish BB, some in the Metroplex, others in the OKC-Tulsa area. It is not one of those areas which shows up too much on fishing chat rooms, and for good reason.You know my digits.

I make the trip to BB every once in awhile, love it out there. I’ve found it’s the best place near DFW to get my fix. Here’s what I suggest:
Evening Hole: Crowded, yes, but fishing great as of last month. Try some cream midges with 6X flouro in the slow water, or a hackle/SJW in the faster water near Lost Creek. There’s some great runs near the rock wall upsream as well. Also try the tailout below the bridge, sometimes you can get it to yourself.
Zone 2: Slow lately, but I hear it has picked up. If you can figure it out, let me know. I’d probably try a dry dropper rig until you get dialed in. The past few times for me, there just hasn’t been that many fish.
Zone 3: no idea, but I hear Presby falls was fishing decent.
Basically, unless it gets crowded as hell, I’d fish evening hole and the water immediately upstream. Hope this helps.
Dusty – BB might not get much chat room pub, but there are some decent fish if you know where to look. This one took a cream midge on a cold day at Evening Hole in March:

I am heading that way. I appreciate all you advise. I will let you know how it went, and maybe we could all meet up there sometime.Dusty. I am out of school until june 2. Let me know when you are ready to do some fishing. Except this weekend. Unfortunetly I have to go to the rangers game and sit in one of the luxury boxes. Then they are making me stay afterwards to watch Robert Earl Keen play… how bad does that suck.

Well… I didnt go.
I called the three rivers fly shop before I left and a nice lady told me that the water was over the spill way and they were about to open the flood gates. Maybe next week will be better. By the way Wes, that is a beautiful fish.Chad
If they are over the spillway and about to open the gates, it could be awhile – a long while. There is typically a burst of “things are great” PR that too quickly follows one of these flooding events, and that is due mostly to a local economy heavily dependent on fishing tourism. They have tested positive for “the Didy”, so beware of that.
They are opening the Spillway gates today, which will flood all of Spillway Creek. They are opening all eight gates, and this will create about 4 times as much flow as was had last year when they did this. I was due to head up there this Saturday, but as this has happened, and they will not even let people down there, we have had to cancel our lodge arrangements. It will likely be weeks before the LMF is fishable again.

Wes-We have been fishing there for years, and done very well. My comments were not meant to say BB is not a good fishery, just that it was good that a lot of people do not hot spot on the internet when it comes to Broken Bow. I was trying to get Chad to abort the discussion and call me instead.

That is a great class, Mick. I assume you are taking it with R. Woodruff? I have taken his course twice, and I learned more than I could ever convey. I have a friend down there as we type, and he told me the whole place is closed off to traffic. It is completely flooded, far worse than last year. I also heard the wooden foot bridges could have been sent down river. That place will not be fishable for at least 3 or 4 weeks. I would not make any plans for the upcoming holiday weekend.
DustyOh that sucks! There go all the fish, all the native born. I wonder if any fish would be able to find some safe haven from the water flow? I also would imagine the lower and upper foot bridges are now only memories. Now we are going to have to start over? And this is really unfortunateas the quality of fish caught had been on a very steady incline, for us at least. I also wonder if Sid’s shop is still standing?
