What are your experiences with furled leaders. What is the difference between a furled leader and the braided leaders from Orvis that so many used to deride?

Started using them late last year. Now, bear in mind I’m fishing warmwater and stillwater, with my smallest tippet size being 4x. I do, however, like the way they roll over very much. I use 5 1/2 foot ones which I add 3-4′ of tippet to, up to 0x if I’m bass fishing in cover. They do require a floatant if you want to fish dries, but a treatment of Mucilin works half a day in our sub-tropic climate…folks in trout water say it’ll last all day. They have zero memory.

If you happen to get a windknot, get it out quick, a downside

Question for RStouf and any other furled leader users out there:

I have never used a furled leader, but I’ve heard that if you throw a tailing loop and your hook strikes the leader, it will hook the leader and you’ll have a heck of a mess.

I’m not the greatest caster…I get by and have a good time. I haven’t had that problem, for sure. It’d have to be a one in a million chance to get a hook into the furled leader, but I guess it’s possible.

If you get a wind knot, now, it is harder to get it loose. But I find the leaders are less wind-knot prone.

    Hope this helps.
