I’ve used plain old vaseline on the guides.  Its worked for me.

It does need to be refreshed from time to time but its cheap, handy,
and doesn’t seem to harm my flylines.

Plus, I carry it as my firestarter(on real cotton cotton balls) so always have some, somewhere in my backpack.

PS Yes I’m reading EVERY POST in the fly fishing section.  If you mention Brookies in any way I’ll know!!!! And, I may email you too!!!   hahahaha

Plenty of good advice above….I do allot of winter fishing…it requires a bit more discipline to keep your gear in good order, and keep yourself warm & dry, but its well worth it.

Never/ever get your reel wet or leave it out in the elements in freezing conditions….layer up….carry at least two pairs of gloves one to fish in, another dry pair to warm up your hands inbetween spots… a small towel is a nice addition, plus handwarmers, something to light a fire, and something to keep you hydrated. Cheers.

Roll cast. Line doesn’t go through your guides since you are not stripping in all the time, thus no water –> ice build up.
