    I’ll be flying to MT will not check any baggage with gear that “might not” get to MT before I have to fly home.

    dude, just ship it all, its 100% easier and while UPS/FedEx insurance aint exactly the easiest to get reimbursed for a claim it is easier than whatever (if anything) the airlines are gonna give you.

    If the reel is sentimental I wouldn’t consider either option. I would buy a cheap reel for travel. If it isn’t, I think having it shipped would be the best overall solution. I had to file a claim for some damage that Fed Ex did to my outboard. It was not that bad once I got the right person on the phone. Sometimes you just gota say Please let me speak to a person who still has a pulse and some brain wave activity. The check was mailed that day!

    Thanks guys… putting the rod, reel, wading staff, and tackle bag in the mail today and insuring it.

    I’ve had reels in carry-on luggage before and I’ve never had a problem.

    Yep, that’s what I figure my luck would be; face off against some rookie with a new broom out to impress the whole world with a nice clean sweep.
