I have read some chatter on the internet lately about possible rule changes with the major airlines, enforcing the size limits.

What I’m really interested in, has anyone had trouble carrying on 4 piece rods. I got a bud that carried on 5 rods, no sacks or tubes just zip tied, back in April to SLC. I prefer a little more protection for my rods.

Has anyone ever carried on a Simms Dry Creek Guide Backpack

Looking at my options in case the rules have changed, headed out to spend 10 days with my bud in Bend Oregon, sampling his waters.

David I have carried on four piece rods many times and have not ever had any trouble, even with a Bazooka style tube. One trick is to gate check your bag, which eliminates a lot of the handling issues that can break things. It also takes it out of the TSA’s hands for the most part. You go through security with the bag instead of your bag wandering off to where the high school dropouts can steal your stuff.

Only issue with gate checking is you do need to keep the bag on the small side just to get it through the scanners, etc. I’d look into the Maximum Legal Carryon line from Patagonia.

I carry-on my 4 piece rods all of the time and have never had a problem getting on a plane with them. The TSA folks won’t stop you at the scanners with it (fishing rods are explicitly allowed), and the gate agents know that it will slip into the back of the overhead no problem, so they don’t hassle either.

I use a codura-covered case lashed to the side of my backpack, or sometimes carried in my hand. I don’t bring my aluminum tubes since I don’t think TSA would let them through.
