I am going to be spending a couple of days in Puerto Rico at the end of March on my way to see my sister in St. Croix. (Ya it sucks to be me. ::)) I was wondering if any of you have fished in Puerto Rico and if you have any recommendations for me. I would love to get into some Tarpon, but I don’t want to waste my time and energy getting all of my gear down there if it is not worth it.

    Joel,

Depending on where you’re staying, there is great tarpon fishing on Puerto Rico.  The San Juan area has a lot of medium size fish in the harbors and a handful of guides to get you to them.  If you can get to the southwest corner of the island there are some real pigs down there.  A potential world record (225 lbs.) was caught on fly in Boqueron last January.  Here’s a link to an article and photo of that particular fish.

If you have time to come over to Vieques we have great year round bonefish and more than a few permit, too.  Good luck.

Thanks for the info Greg! I know we are flying into San Juan and that is about all I know for sure. I will get into contact with my sister to see what she has planned for us. I checked out your website as well and it would be fun to try and hook up. My wife is pretty good with a fly rod as well so I am sure she would want to give it a shot as well. Neither of us has much experience in the way of flats fishing. I have been once, but all I caught was a cuda and a jack fish or something like that.

I will find out more info and be back in touch with you Greg. Thanks again!
