MemberI’ve got to fly down to Orlando in early September to take some depositions of some corporate reps – I have conveniently scheduled them to occur on the Friday before Labor Day. Since it’s a holiday weekend, I went ahead and snagged a condo at Coco Beach for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and I’ll fly back Tuesday morning.
For the majority of that time I’ll probably just dink around on the beach and maybe cast to whatever I see in the surf, but I would like to get out at least one day in a boat and do a solid full day of some serious fishing. Since I’m flying and not driving, that means hiring a guide for the boat. It doesn’t hurt to have some local knowledge and expertise anyway.
I figure Saturday would probably be the best day for that – maybe I could zip on up to the Titusville vicinity early Saturday morning and stalk some redfish somewhere in Mosquito Lagoon, or maybe – surely – there are some good redfish flats somewhere around Cape Canaveral in all that marshy-looking stuff I can see on Google Earth.
So who’s a good guide in that general area? I need to get something booked soon because September will be here before we know it, and Labor Day Weekend is probably not going to be the easiest weekend of the year to book a guide trip.
When I say “good guide,” a couple things I have in mind are:
1. I don’t like “clock watchers.” I will get there as early as I need to in order to hit optimum conditions, and I like a good full day. Nothing peeves me more than flyshop guides in some of the destination areas where a full day guide trip is 8:00 to 3:00, no exceptions, no matter what’s going on. I’ve had a trip in Colorado where the guide has remarked on an awesome hatch that “has been coming off at sunrise,” but we missed it because the shop’s guide trips start at 8:00 a.m., no matter what, and I’ve had a tarpon trip where the guide got angry and made a nasty complaining call right in front of me on his cell phone because I hooked a huge fish just as we were reeling in to quit and I made him “late” because I was fighting the fish. Neither is something I want to repeat.
2. There are trips where you go to learn a certain method, technique, or body of water, and there are trips where you just want to catch fish. I always learn something with a good guide, but I’m looking more for a boat to hopefully put me on fish this time rather than a teacher. If redfish aren’t happening, I’d rather fish for something else instead of hunting something that’s not going to happen.
Any suggestions?

MemberI have fished with Capt Todd Fuller out of Orlando Outfitters. Great guy. I had a 5 hr trip scheduled and he poled me solid for 7 hrs in nasty conditions. He did not stop all day long. This was when I first started and sucked. He had another trip that night for a video and could have just quit and taken a break but he kept after it. I think you will find him highly recommended. He was running a maverick hpxt but I saw on his website that he is in with hells bay now. I would think that Sept should be off the hook. Tarpon/snook, reds etc.

MemberStick Marsh and Farm Pond 13 if it isn’t too hot then. Everybody needs to fish that place at least once before they croak.
