Kent EdmondsMemberI thought a few might be interested in a report on the Flint as it looks like we may have some fish-able water for a bit. I’m near embarrassed to post my photos here but here goes anyhow…
It’s been tough to get on the Flint this summer as water levels have been higher than I have seen them in 20 years. Here’s a comparison of 2012 and 2013. Fishing is best here when the level is under 7′, ideally under 6′. If it’s higher than that, wading can be difficult and the water is likely muddy.

Fishing has been good during those brief windows of opportunity, and it’s fun to fish in spots that in most years hold practically no water.

The bass seem fat and happy in the high water…

We’ve caught some pretty nice bream too. Here’s a big river shellcracker.

After trying for over 10 years, I finally got my old friend Carl Warmouth out to fish the river…
And got to introduce a few folks both to flyfishing and the Flint. Here’s 9-yr old Jordan with her first fish ever, and on the fly! She’d also never paddled a kayak in moving water, but she had no problem with the Flint’s whitewater either.

The last week or so has seen the river in good shape (and the forecast for the next few days is pretty good). I managed to get out on Wednesday and had some fun. For me the Flint is the greatest. It’s just hard to say what’s more fun – those big shoalies that pull like giants….

…or maybe the smaller fish that lay up in little bitty water and destroy your Stealth Bomber the instant it hits the water….

The Itinerant AnglerGreat post and beautiful fish Kent. If you were going to recommend a canoe float for shoal bass, where would you tell someone to plan to put in and take out?

Jay MalyonMemberI have always wanted to make it down that way. Looks like a beautiful river.

Kent EdmondsMemberTop float choice would be Sprewell Bluff to Hwy 36. It’s a good all day fish/float with about 3-4 hrs actual paddling (depending on level). The vehicle shuttle is a short 15 min drive.
Hwy 36 to Big Lazer WMA or Pobiddy Rd is also a good one, but longer paddle and longer shuttle. Pobiddy is an iffy place to leave a takeout vehicle too.
Don’t let the water levels drop too much more for a paddle. Wade fishing is good too – I’ve been doing about half and half.
Is that someone you? If so, email or phone me (I might tag along and help you shuttle).

MemberKent,
Is Flat Shoals still closed and if so is it going to be closed forever?
I’m moving back to Senoia in January, hope we can get together.
