Going to be in Yellowstone for 7+ days starting August 18th.

Flat Creek has been on my bucket list for years, I always drive by it. My fishing bud, has very limited fishing time in Yellowstone, this if my 11th trip.

Would you stay in the park or come out and do a day on Flat Creek or put it on next years trip ?

    Thanks

Flat Creek is an absolute blast and I would totally fish it versus anything on the south end of Yellowstone Park that time of year. Bring a lot of hoppers and tread lightly, because the whole area is basically a bog which will radiate your footfalls into the water. There are big fish in Flat Creek. They’ll sit on the inside corners of bends sometimes in shallow water where you can see them. Walk very gently, keep a low profile (literally, kneel and crawl), and bring a box of hatching mayfly dries just to be prepared.

    I love that place.

Zack is right, a really cool, place. Fished it many times and landed a nice 24″ Cutt there on a 3 weight with 6X on a really small hopper. Fish are tough but any downstream drift will get them if you get on your hands and knees. Those fish are simply beautiful!

As the others have said, Flat Creek is worth a day, particularly if you’ve never fished it before. The technical sight and stalk fishing there is super fun, but also don’t be afraid to tie on a big streamer and rip it past some of the undercut banks…
