Seafood think of it this way… if people are buying the laptop case then that is a few less people fishing on the water. Which always makes me happy sortive. You gotta admit it is a pretty case.

Damn, that is an awesome case. I have been looking for one for my 17″ MBP Mac.  My old neoprene case is shot. If this case came in a 17″ I would buy it in a second.  That is not apocalyptic, just modern.  I carry my laptop with me wherever I go; including on boats.  I have a smart phone but truthfully I just carry my laptop nowadays.  However, I understand the argument that one should leave their home gear at home and that fishpond should focus on fishing equipment.  I’m not making a strong argument but Fishpond had me in mind when they made this product (actually, I am going to email them today and request a 17″ case, aahh capitalism/market force in action).

If you carry your laptop on boats you should really just get a Pelican.

I’m not feeling that fishpond thing but that’s sort of beside the point anyway being that it’s just another zippered case.

Carter, good point, Pelicans are nice, just a bit to Niche for me (play on words, Ha).  BTW, I didn’t want to imply that I take my laptop on a boat often, just sometimes (but I do take it to the can with me :-[).

BTW, wow, Fishpond emailed me back in like 5 minutes.  They said they don’t make a 17″ inch case but their research showed a significant market for the laptop cases in general.

    Neil,

No offense meant, but a laptop in my boat better float… 😉

Just so I’m not labelled a geek on a fly fishing blog let me explain . . . I take the computer on dive boats when diving.

    Neil,

No offense meant, but a laptop in my boat better float… 😉  Some places are sacred…

This is the direction I was heading…thanks Jay.

Maybe they can make a killing on laptop cases so that they can lower prices on everything else so that normal people can afford them

    It is a nice case.

Slightly off topic, but pelican cases were discussed so let me tell you a little tale… First, I have just about every pelican in the 1000 up to 1500 series case.

Slightly off topic, but pelican cases were discussed so let me tell you a little tale… First, I have just about every pelican in the 1000 up to 1500 series case.  Including some of the 1700 series laptop cases.  I have ALWAYS trusted my pelicans implicitly.  They have housed my electronic and photo gear aboard kayaks and flatbottoms in the swamps of north-east Arkansas, on Zodiacs in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, and in the mountains of Vermont.

Last summer I was paddling my kayak equipped with a pelican 1400, 1150, 1200, and a couple of 1000 series cases.  The 1400 housed a Nikon D70 and Sigma AFS 70-200 2.8.  The 1200 housed a 28-80 2.8, a prime 400 5.6 and a stack of CF cards.  The 1150 housed a Sony UX180 hand-top computer, USB cellular modem and some other gear.  The 1000’s housed an Iphone, car keys, wallet, etc…

After shooting some kayakers and wildlife I had the gear stowed and was eddy riding (stalled in an eddy heading upstream waiting on other boats to come through white-water).  Suddenly I was upside down and forced to wet-exit.  My boat stayed upside down for a few moments while I swam back up to the eddy where it was bouncing around.  I got there the 1400 had sprung loose from the front straps but was still tethered to the boat.. the rest of the cases remained strapped in place, but submerged.  The 1400 was floating top-side down with about 1/2 of the top under a couple of inches of water.

I rolled and drained the boat, retrieved the 1400, lashed it back down, and made my way down river to the take out.

At the take out I sorted my gear and started opening cases… first.. the 1000’s.. my wallet was damp, Iphone had droplets on it!  YIKES!  The 1200 had moisture in it.. the lenses had visible moisture on them and the foam was damp… at this point I’m starting to sweat… the 1150… was bone dry… but the 1400 when opened was very wet.. with water on the camera body and lens.. I immediately pulled the batteries from the camera body and stuck the body and lenses in bags of rice overnight.

When I returned home I decided to test the gear in the tub.. I weighed the gear that was in each case and approximated it with gear that was water neutral.  I floated the 1400 upside down in the tub for 35 minutes… when I pulled it there was 1/2 cup of water INSIDE the case.. the 1200 had a few drops, and the 1000’s just had “heavy condensation”…

These cases are used, but not abused.  The O-rings are inspected before each trip and lubricated, they are also inspected for sand or grit in the O-ring or the channel.

I was shocked, I received no comment from Pelican but I could send the cases back to them and in 6-8 weeks they would send me another one.

This taught me a new lesson, inspection isn’t enough.. test.. test.. test…  in my case.. I now carry the camera gear inside and aquapack inside a pelican.

I frequently have a couple of laptops in the boat with me.. now inside auqapacks inside peli’s.

    Test your peli’s….

This is encouraging since I just ordered a Pelican 1450!

If they really want to sell these things, they need to make a 17″ bag.

I don’t know about that, maybe in the post-apocalyptic PC world, all but one of the Mac offerings are 15 inch widescreens though..

I wouldn’t really call it a case but more of a protective sleeve.

Actually I see no problem with the Fishpond Laptop Case.  In fact, I find it to be a perfect complement to their Jackrabbit Messanger Bag or Boulder Briefcase.  I just can’t imagine leaving home without these items along with their Barcelona Street Backpack and matching Saratoga Hanging Toiletry Kit.

no hate for the fishpond stuff in general, I’ve just been looking for a nice slim case/sleeve for a macbook for a while now and this one appears to be another disapointment.

    Carter,

What are you looking for in the case?

    #23399

This is getting closer, would like a pocket on the outside to slip the charger in though.
