Mike LewisMemberHave you guys tried this new product? It’s basically a series of interlocking articulation shanks to make the tail of an articulated bait fish fly. Or the Front part with a trailer hook, I suppose.
I tried to use the “Game Changer” fly as a base, I used a 4/0 owner hook, CCT body fur, CCG eyes, and DNA for the tail.
I tied up these Friday night when I got some materials in the mail. I tried out the grey-colored one yesterday and it looked very good in the water. More testing and revisions to come, I got a ton of material in to play with. Sorry for the low quality pics.

Jay MalyonMemberThat cct body fur is a pain to work with. I’m not to crazy about it. I like the looks of the EP streamer brushes for this fly.

The Itinerant AnglerDo we know anyone who has actually caught a fish on this yet?

Jay MalyonMemberThis guy.

Today was the first day I really got to fish the ones I tied. Done right they look amazing in the water. Lots of wiggle going on.Aug 18, 2013 at 8:32 pm #74924
Jay MalyonMemberHere’s the 3 I have tied so far. The middle and bottom one have caught stripers. The gray one was tied with EP streamer brush, which I think works better. The CCT body fur is very dense and falls apart if you are not careful while you are tying.

Here are step by step instructions

The Itinerant AnglerWell done dude. I’m shocked the fish were catchable with the weather as cold as it has been this weekend. 66 in August in Atlanta?!
Good job.

MemberI tied two of these in the smaller size. Did not wiggle very much (not like the video) and thus seemed a lot of trouble for not much more a action than a flatwing style hackle? I don’t see a mechanism in the fly design to cause wiggle. Used a front head of deer hair and Hareline Baitfish emulator flash for the rest and used three segments.

Jay MalyonMemberWere you using the articulated fish spine and not just the articulated shanks? I tied mine the way the instructions above showed. I think synthetics work better for this fly. Anything that comes on a brush or attached to a string so that you can palmer it on works. I think the way you trim them effects the action a lot too.

MemberI used three decreasing size fish spines as per included in the package. Somewhere I read to use a stiffer head to promote the action. I guess one should not use deer hair. I still don’t see how they are getting the wiggle they are getting on the video without a lip or other mechanism to induce side to side motion.

Above are my latest offerings. The rainbow got fished pretty hard Sunday, great movement and look in the water, not a bite.
That being said, It’s been rarely fishable in the rivers I normal fish with all the rain, but I have gotten to try out the patterns at least.
I think the side to side motion comes with a tapering cut down the fish. I use all 4 sizes of fish spine, and two hooks, so it’s actually 6 segments. You could cut off the rear hook barb if desired and if you had strong cutters.
Congrats again on the fish Jay.

The Itinerant AnglerHow do you find the stinger hook affects the overall action, Mike?
