First Trip…

Well…yesterday I was up early and out the door by 0530. Three hours later I was streamside in North Carolina…and shivering since temps were in the low twenties. When I left at three in the afternoon…the temps had never got out of the mid 30’s.
This was the first trip with the McFarland Spruce Creek fly rod and I will tell you that this rod is pretty damn sweet. When I first emailed Mike, I told him that I wanted a “do-it-all” five weight…and this rod fits the bill perfectly. I needed a rod that I could use around S.C. and N.C. but also be a solid trip rod as well.
Most of the day I was short casting a double midge nymph rig with a little bit of weight and a tiny foam indicator. The rod didn’t protest a bit…and was just a pleasure to cast.
The other part of the trip was testing out the new camera, a Pentax Optio W20. I was a little worried about some of the photographs that I took since the display screen made all the photographs look pretty washed out and softly focused. After they were downloaded onto the computer and I had a chance to give them a few adjustments on Picasa, I am overall pretty impressed. Hopefully on the next trip I can try using the underwater feature…it was just to cold to try it on this trip.

The old J. W. Young Beaudex is the perfect match for this rod…and the Filson merino wool fingerless gloves are a cold weather must.Sound slike you had a great day on the water albeit a little chilly.
I would have to concur on the Filson gloves, they are a must.
