Stu HastieMemberHi all, I thought I’d see if I could figure out how to post a pic on the updated forum.
I took my two oldest sons out for a fish a couple of weeks ago. My oldest has been practicing his casting at home with an old glass rod I had propped up by the back door, and has already got his first fish under his belt. My second son hasn’t been so proactive with his practice, and so I haven’t really spent much time with him and his casting.
It’s late season here and the rainbows are fit and fat and ready for love; a real handfull. My oldest got the first fish of the day, and handled it really well. I was impressed. I hooked up for his younger brother, and also for Alex when he was a bit nervous about casting into the trees. There was plenty of fish there, and we were on a time budget, so when Will kept bugging me to have a cast, I kept brushing him off. The water was a bit tough for an absolute beginner, but toward the end of our beat I knew there was a perfect pool for a learner that should hold fish.
When we got there I gave Alex first crack at the pool. I was hoping he’d pick up a fish in the back of the pool, and that should leave some sweet water for his younger brother.
Sure enough, that’s the way it played out. Alex pulled a feisty two pounder from the back of the pool, and so Will stepped up and grabbed the rod. OMG, when did that boy learn to cast? He surprised me by pushing out a nice cast into what should have been the best water of the pool. He had covered all of the water by the time I had hit the snooze button for the second time on the “go home now” alarm. Sadly, without so much as a touch. My heart sunk a little. I was sure there was going to be another fish in there, but that’s fishing! On the absolute very last cast of the day, would you believe it, he came up solid on what was to be the fish of the day!
It was a fantastic little session with my two boys, a sign of good things to come in the years ahead. Along with the stills, I also took a bit of video, and one thing that struck me when watching the footage, was how the boys listened to everything I said. Whenever I told them to do something, they responded immediately. It was amazing. I’ve never seen that before…Jun 23, 2013 at 11:12 am #74135

Stu HastieMemberThanks guys. That was probably the best day ever on the water for me. Fun times ahead.
Because we were only there for a short time, and the open nature of the river, I took the 70-200 2.8 out for a walk. Glad I did.Jun 25, 2013 at 6:26 pm #74156
