MemberThere seems to be a renewed interest out there with fiberglass rods.
What’s up with this? What’s the action in general with glass vs graphite with regards to casting and playing a fish ? Slower load than graphite ?
I checked out the Kabuto and Norie Amberstar glass from Japan – Whoa !! Elegant and futuristic from the pics – Wondering what the take is on a glass resurgence out there ? Whats old is new ? Just more FF fetish stuff from the industry to spend money on ? or is there more to it than that ?Jul 3, 2010 at 6:51 pm #43891Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerYou need to check out Cameron Mortensen’s site, The Fiberglass Manifesto.

David AndersonMemberYep, you have to check out Camerons site – it’s awesome.
Glass rods are sweet and the Scott 7′ #3 is one of my favorites, though I don’t have access to a lot of the smaller brands you get in the US to compare it too.
I don’t think glass rods are better than a good graphite rod really, just a different feel.
They’re well worth a look.www.dsaphoto.com

MemberThanks for the tip on the TFM site – If I’m not mistaken, it seems from what I saw at the site, that the new glass rods are oriented toward lighter line weight rods with a tendency toward full flex action, much like the Orvis Superfine series. I’m still not sure what new glass is bringing to the table that’s not there already. Guess I would have to cast one to appreciate it. Jeez, I’d love to get my hands on a Kabuto and take one of those for a spin, but that is not in my budget for the immediate future.

MemberCameron, Thanks for your imput, nothing like hearing it straight from the man himself !! I’m not into fast action graphite rods unless it’s bigger water and fish cane occasionally as well. Sounds like the description you give about glass action might be something I would like to explore, especially with regards to a small stream rod. Might have to start a lay away fund for a Kabuto. And yes, my first stick was glass as well. It was real club, but did the job in terms of getting me into the game – Thanks Again For Your Reply

InactiveI have an old Scott 5pc. 5wt. Fiberglass rod that I travel with all the time when I take business trips and don’t want to pack all of fishing gear.

The Itinerant AnglerI would love to love the Fiberhammer but I just couldn’t.

Cameron MortensonMemberRegan…I have a Fiberhammer on demo right now and like it. I agree with Zach that you certainly need to play with it a bit to figure it out. I’m no whiz with a two hander but like how it flexed with a Skagit head. I’m looking forward to a couple different Scandi heads that I have for it. I think it has more uses than just steelhead. I’m using the demo for striper here in S.C. It certainly is an interesting concept.

Check out Part 1 of the TFM review of the Fiberhammer if you like…

MemberI can tell you glass is far more durable than graphite.
