Can you show us some pics of the grips you’re mentioning?

Uh…. Zach, no need to get worried here. 😉

I’ve got a 5wt and an 8wt Fenwick and like them both.

Fenwick grip is more like a half wells grip but mounted with the small end to the reel seat, the oposite way as the more common reverse half wells or western grip.

The ritz grip is more like a full wells grip, but this narrower at the rear tapering up to the front without the pronounced hump in the middle like a full wells.

    Hey Bob –

I think that is also known as a “half wells” (thus the “reverse half wells” that we commonly see now, mostly for aesthetic/marketing reasons).

No pun intended but man those Fenwick full wells grips are butt ugly! 😀
I know that these Fenwick glass rods are considered sacred by fiber glass lovers.

Here are some pics of a modified full well grips I think are really sexy.

These are pics of rods made by the Alaskan rod maker Chris Carlin. This grip also looks nice on smaller rods, say #4-5 rods.

Here’s another similar modified full wells grip by the Japanese rod maker Kagerow. This rod is a 3 weight rod. I think the grip looks very handsome and delicate too. On smaller rods, the right proportions (length, diameter, shape) are very important.

Grips? Rods? Sexy? That’s why I love this sport – all the greatest ingredients.

Butt ugly?? I have a couple of old fenwicks and like both the feel and look of the grips. Beauty is definitely a subjective thing………..

The half or modified wells grips can be really comfortable. It is up to the user as to their preference of course.

The key really is their length. To me, the grips on the Fenwick rods above look too long. Kept short and in scale, they can look great on shorter, light line rods. Most people think they need a slim cigar/reverse half wells on a short rod, but may be surprised if they get the chance to try a few other shapes out as well. The Kagerow always look nice as do some of the Wojnicki grips.

    Cheers,

    Callum
