This was the very first trip with my new Abel Super 5 and Babb Cane rod/combo and darn if I didn’t fall and scuff both of ’em! –I view it as one of those Murphy Law things: I’ve fished for YEARS and barely scratched my lesser priced equipment but, darned if I didn’t make a real splash on my first trip out with the costly stuff!

Lou, hope the gear and your knee heal O.K.

Studs add a tremendous level of traction over plain felt. Try some short, hex-head sheet metal screws in your felts until you get some new boots. Simms is selling packages of screws for just this purpose and from what I can determine they are supposed to be harder than what you can buy at the hardware store. Your knees and gear will be much happier.

I have been fishing the Hiwassee for a long time and I use Simms boots with studs screwed in to the heel and I use a Folstaff. I busted my ass and dinged my Abel creek reel and barely kept myself from being swept downstream about 300 yards down from Fox’s cabin. The Hiwassee is a beautiful River but its tough to wade!

Some of the streams in the smokies have the round granite boulders like the middle prong of little pigeon, studs are like ball bearings up there.

I left my XP on top of my old Explorer in just the sock. When I looked over at the empty tube I realized what I did and went back to find it. I found it, but had run it over, probably twice. Sage quickly replaced it and sent the new one back in the same sock. The sock has the tread marks on it to this day and make a very good reminder every time I take the rod out of the tube.
