I wonder would a system of rolling fishing bans for both recreational and commercial fisherman work ?

Seems to me, that the approach of permanently locking up water makes a lot of people unhappy, but if the lockup was for a period of time that allowed the fish populations to recover and the areas changed from season to season, more anglers might get into it.

Okay…as my grandfather is fond of saying…3 sides to every story.  We have seen what one manufacturer has to say…have any of us..myself included read the full report?  Below is a link to the report I believe they are referring to.  I am going to go through it myself before commenting further.  People pay a lot of money to folks to spin things to fit their needs.  I know I am tasked with finding those types of folks everyday in my executive search business.  As a result I am always a skeptic…especially when Shimano does not see fit to provide a link to said recently published administration document”  I have to ask Why?
That being said…Shimano may be right? They may not be…but until I have read it through for myself I will say it is safe to say I have only 1 side of the story.

I don’t see anything in that report that makes sense of the histrionics in the Shimano announcement.  All the spatial planning is to take place in the second 90 days, which that report doesn’t cover.  The report says they received “over 500” comments to the website during the initial public comment period, which isn’t really all that many.  There were some roundtable discussions, but they were just to generate the high-level recommendations in that report, which doesn’t appear to say anything specific about closures. (Though, I’ll admit, I didn’t read every word of it.)

I don’t see a problem with the mandate for ecosystem-based management, in principle, as opposed to uncoordinated and disjunct management for individuals species or resources.

I don’t see a problem with the “best available science” language, in principle or in practice.  That’s the same language the FWS uses in it’s management directives, too, as far as I know.

I don’t see a problem with making the recommendations consistent with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.  That policy is old enough to drink, it’s about time we signed on. 🙂  Seriously, though, international fisheries agreements are notoriously toothless.  I’d like to see this administration grow a pair and shame the Europeans into some meaningful international policies on defensible quotas, subsidies, migratory stocks, and flags of convenience, but this policy appears to address only EEZ regulations.

So, am I missing something?

I don’t think anyone took your post as a political statement Stuart…if it is a post or release like Shimano’s, that gets folks reading, paying attention to all sides of an issue….then great.

Wish more folks would get involved or take the time to read more about issues that concern them  Too easy to be spoon fed information right now. Information that can be completely out of context.
