Thought I share some pics of a recent outing of mine. It started out about 3:00am in my apartment down at Purdue. I was watching a movie and tying flies, and then I got the itch. I had to go fishing. So I get all my gear together and take off for up north to home. I come strolling in the house to find my dad who has just woke up watching Spanish Fly. He looks at me with a puzzled look, as what the heck am I doing up so early. I go it just happens and ask he wanted to go fishing. Mind you this is at 4:30 in the morning now. He loads up all his gear and we take off. We hit the water a little after 7:00am. Not a sole in site, and I see fish. I knew right there it was going to be one of those days. The one where you’re in the zone and you are just going to destroy fish. Second cast hooked up, this just reinsured my feeling I just had. Good fight couple of nice runs, but the fish was brought in quickly, oh yeah forgot to mention I was going after carp.

The other thing I forgot to mention was that I took at my switch rod.  Here are some more pics from the day.

    Hooked up again.

    And again.

Number 3 on the day, I had only been out for over an hour.

I bet he wishes he would have rethought taken that fly.

    My signature carp pose.

    Hooked up yet again.

    Another carp on the board.

    Yet another defeated opponent.

One of the nicer fish of the day.

    And the onslaught continues.

I’m trying to think of a time the rod was actually straight and not bent.

    Another nice fish.

Now you may be wondering were the heck my dad was at. Well he was there, but not hooking too many fish, and did not have one on the board yet. I was starting to feel real bad about this, so I quit fishing and decided to play guide more or less. I cut the fly I was using off and tied it to my dad’s leader. I decided to bow out for the day already doing a ton of damage. Third cast bam my dad is hooked up. At this point I’m having to coach him through fighting the fish since he has never taken anything of this size and power on a fly rod before.

    My dad fighting the fish.

Finally my dad beaches the fish and has his catch. This was honestly the greatest part of the day for me. This is only my dad’s second carp on the fly.

Here is a pic of the release. I love this shot.

Zach, rain isn’t always that bad for carp. My favorite time to go is right after a rain in some of the places around my apartment. Carp usually put on the feed bag right after a rain.

Timscott, thanks for the title. I’ve also been graced by the name of Carp Slayer as well. The real nice thing is that I have about 6 spots I like to go to, but these pics are from my favorite by far.

    Tim, check your PM.

Used to fish for carp of the our dock on Grand Lake in Oklahoma growing up, during the rain always seemed to be the best time.

    Scott,

I use 3 rods mainly for carp.
    1. 8wt. Z-axis, 11ft., fast action: This is the rod that I am using in the pictures.
    2. 6wt. Z-axis, 9ft., fast action: This is my main carp rod, I use this for carp of all sizes.
    3. 4wt. VT2, 8.5ft., mod-fast action: I started to use this rod based on a dare. My body told me I could land a carp over 15lbs. in under 10minutes using it. I ended up landing a 20lber. in about 7 minutes on it. I like to use it on carp that are around 5lbs or so. Lots of fun.

Outstanding fish Mike! Haven’t yet been out, but had to go look at one of the lakes on the Army post where I work today, and saw lots of fish engaged in spawning behavior, so now that the weather is decent for fishing the fish won’t be interested!

Oh well, I’m heading to LA next week (that’s Louisiana, not Lower Alabama) for the Gulf Coast Council FFF Conclave in Lake Charles to do some seminars, and hopefully we’ll get into some reds.  That will get me by until our carp start biting.

One of these days I want to come fish Lake Michigan.  It looks like a great place with lots of good fish.

M- if it’s not a trade secret what you force feeding those Golden Bones?

    Aaron,

I’m not force feeding them anything. Carp will readily take a fly if presented correctly. That day the fly of choice was a size 6 Borski Fur Shrimp. Another good fly is Whitlock’s near nuff crayfish size 6. Really anything crayfish looking that is brown or tan works great. You just have to be on your A game casting to get the fly right where they want it.

    Aaron,
None taken, I figured that you wear implying something along those line. I’m pretty ate up with carp, I think about catching them everyday. I landed over 100 on the fly last year, and my goal for this year is over 200. I myself would rather catch carp over almost any species right now.

And to me, Carp is kind of a by catch.. They are great, but I would rather take a Yellowfish, twice the fight, twice the skill, twice the fish… carp are in the same/similar systems, but are not targeted hard…

    Maybe it is time…

BTW, is that the sea in the back ground?? In Cape Town, there is a place called Coastal Park, where the treated water from a surge facility flows for a few hundred yards, be for it dumps into the sea, this is one of the most productive Carp spot I know…

    Great fishing…

    Mike,

That’s not the sea in the background. It’s one of the Great Lakes. Carp are worth giving a shot they are a lot of fun.
