Some of you might already know this little trick but for me it was a “dah” moment when I learned it recently. I have been tying epoxy heads recently and using 5-minute epoxy (I also use EZ sparkle body and hot glue but for bonefish biters I like the cheap old epoxy because my hot glue gun never gets hot enough and I hate using alcohol flame burners). I had previously been painting the surface after it dried with varying results. This little trick is brilliant and simple. Make your two epoxy splotches on plastic mixing surface made from a zip-lock bag (I use the two-in-one 5 minute epoxy by Devcon, $2.99 at hardware store). Then take a waterproof marker and make streaks next/adjacent to the epoxy; it won’t dry immediately because it is on plastic. Then mix the epoxy and scrape in the colored ink/marker slowly until you get the color you want. I have heard that Rit dye also works “IF” mixed in alcohol first. Apply to your hook/bead-eyes and let dry while rotating the head or body to shape you want. Once dry the epoxy is colored already and it won’t bleed out or fade.
