So I’ll go ahead and start this report off with the bad news….my trip has come to a conclusion.  I’m currently back in Michigan going through massive withdraws.  That being said, I have about two weeks of back-logged pictures and reports so I’ll keep throwing some stuff up on here from the last couple of weeks of my trip.

A while ago I spent a couple of nights in Twin Bridges and spent my days on the Ruby.  This was of course, after my second visit to the taco bus on my way back through Dillon.  Honestly, if you’re ever in the area, don’t miss the taco bus.  It’s awesome.

The Ruby was a much smaller river than I had expected, and it was also flowing a lot dirtier than expected.  However, I was actually kind of happy to see the stained water because it meant that they should respond well to streamers.  I strung up the sink tip and started ripping some double screamers…immediately turning fish.  I moved tons of fish, but they weren’t quite committing to the fly.  Nonetheless, I landed some quality fish and had a great time just getting non-stop chases from fish all day.  The next day continued much the same…streamers in dirty water on the Ruby, moving lots of fish, and landing a couple.  Overall, it was a really fun couple of days on a cool river.

I tried to fish the upper Ruby above the reservoir while I was there, but the access was really tough.  The vast majority of the river (both upper and lower) is private, and the access on the upper river was not marked at all.  I drove around for over an hour trying to find an access spot, and finally gave up.  I decided that the last thing I wanted to run into was some land owner wielding a 12 gauge asking how I accessed his property.

I ran into this really cool historic building in the Ruby area…Robber’s Roost.  It dates back to the 1860’s and has a really cool story behind the property and the building involving wild west gangs and eventual vigilante justice.

After the Ruby, I hit the road and headed back toward SW Montana to meet up with Corey and Eric, but not before getting distracted a few times en route.  I stopped in Nevada City to wander around the collection of old 19th century buildings from SW Montana.  Honestly, it was a really cool place…an amazing collection of some of the oldest Montana buildings.  I wandered around there for a little while and then hit the road again.

As I passed Quake Lake shortly before dark, I glanced down at the lake and notice the water boiling with rising fish.  Needless to say, I quickly found a place to pull off, grabbed my rod, and ran down to the lake without even taking the time to put on more appropriate footwear than my flip flops.  There were fish rising everywhere, and after much observation, I realized that they were rising to brownish mayfly of about a size 16 (an epeorus spinner to be exact).  I tied on a worthy fly, and got two quick fish before darkness surrounded me.

do your brother a favor and take him fishing on his wedding day, that way his bride will know what he likes.

I gave my bride her engagement ring on top of Chimney Tops in the Smokies 😉
