I have been playing around with quill bodies and Catskill dries and emergers the last few weeks. My xmas shopping is done, I’m on vacation and bored. :)This is an experiment. I think I will do a few of these in #12, #14, and #16 for next season and see how they fish.

    Anyway:
    hook – #12 C49S
    thread – black 8/0
    shuck – brown z-lon
    wing -cdc
body – stripped peacock quill covered with flexament
    thorax – peacock herl
overwing – couple of fibers deer body hair (supposed to help the cdc wing keep its shape.)

Nice info Davy. 🙂 I am starting to fall in love with quill bodies. I admire the slim segmented look. I would like to try dying some. I can see a Klinkhammer in my future with a dyed olive quill body. 😉 Although the though of it being even more brittle kinda scares me…

Wapsi do sell dyed PC herl, just need to take care when you strip it.
Another great material not used to day is horse hair. It makes perfect bodies, again it can be dyed to any color, very strong fiber also.
It is translucent and provides for great segmentation effects.

so far as l am aware of not available from a fly shop here. I just wrote a article for Fly Tyer related to its use, again a material at one time very popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

    Davy.
