I am going to be heading to Florida next week and will be wading for Snook and Sea Trout. I would like to take my camera in my Ortlieb Aqua Cam bag while I am wading.

My question, for the saltwater regulars, is if there is any preventative or post-trip maintenance you do on your camera after being in a salt environment? I imagine I should wipe everything down with a damp cloth after each outing. Is there anything else you do to help prevent salt damage? I had a cell phone get one tiny drop of saltwater in it once and the tracks on the PCB inside turned to mush. I would prefer not to have that happen to my DSLR. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I keep some desiccant packets in the bottom of my bag (I have one of the Ortliebs as well) and make sure to have a clean, dry cloth along to wipe any splashes/spray throughout the day. At night, I give everything a wipe with a damp cloth.

Since you’re wading, and presumably your hands will be wet with saltwater, I’d carry along a couple of ziplocs with dry (or maybe slightly moist) towels (paper or cloth) to wipe your hands off before you shoot.

If it’s windy, be particularly careful of salt spray. Amazing how tiny droplets can be deposited on all surfaces . . . and sneak inside . . .

When you’re all done and back home, after the final wipe, leave the camera out where it can air dry completely, and where you can watch for any developing corrosion.

And insurance is a really good investment . . .

Great advice. Saltwater on my hands was one of my main concerns. I need to get some desiccant and wet wipes. Thanks.
