I’m a lurker on here and figured I’d get in the mix again. Recently married and received a special gift from a good friend of an Outex “Big O” housing for some underwater work. Just so happened a good spin fishing buddy of mine decided to make good on wanting to give fly fishing a try.
We headed out to southwest Wisconsin to fish part of the Driftless that I like to call my little slice of heaven. I promised him tight casting and lots of hopper fishing. We were rewarded with some solid BWO action, good nymphing conditions and some great fishing (along with plenty of knots, lost flies and spooked fish).
All in all we had a blast and he’s a newly converted fly fisherman. He’s already gone and purchased a kit, stolen a couple of my fly boxes full of flies and headed out this weekend with his brother. Fun to get someone interested and always good to have someone to fish with. Plus, I got the shot I was planning, which always helps.
Cool shots, Brad – thanks for sharing. For some reason I was thinking the Driftless area was known for brook trout–is that not true?

Thanks Zach! There are quite a few streams in the area that tend to hold more brookies. Those tend to be a bit tighter from a casting perspective, and I was just teaching my buddy how to cast. We opted for more of the wider, more open creeks which tended to have more browns than rainbows and brookies. With so many options in the area, there’s more than a handful of opportunities to catch the “trout slam” and even the occasional tiger trout if you know where to look.
