I’m thinking of picking up a motor for my 16′ Clacka and wanted to see what some of the guys here would recommend.

This will be mainly for pushing the boat around on stillwaters versus motoring them against any sorts of current.

Does anyone here know about running a trolling motor on drifters?

Mike…..I use a 6hp Mercury 2-stroke longshaft and it works fine for the purpose you describe. It’s no speed demon but will move the boat at a leisurely pace. Also has enough power to get you upstream on slow tailraces if you don’t want to fool with a shuttle.

My motor has an external tank. If I had it to do again….I’d opt for a 4 or 5 hp 4-stroke that has the gas tank incorporated into the motor simply to avoid clutter in the boat. I’d stick with the longshaft (20″) due to the amount of rocker inherent in most driftboat designs.

    Mike,

55 lb is only about half a horsepower. Hope you don’t plan on going too far or too fast. Pick up a used (in good shape) 2 1/2 horse Merc 2 cycle long shaft or lower your transom mount for a standard shaft (lift mounts are available to bolt on). The 2 cycles had integral fuel tanks and are very light (compared to the 4 cycle). However, they are not made anymore.

Again, thanks for the info guys.

Besides cost, the reason I was leaning towards electric is the amount of water that it would provide us access to.

Yes I have used a trolling motor on my Clacka on lakes.
